Natural Wonder |
While I may not be the most religious person, I was happy to donate a framed print of Natural Wonder to the GLBT-welcoming Metropolitan Community Church of Omaha for their Spring Fling fundraiser. If you're an Omaha boy or just happen to be in the area, the event is March 31 at the Florence City Hall in Omaha NE.

New Release
Encounter |
While working on my latest piece, Encounter, I noticed some coincidental similarities with my previous work, Deep Blue. Both feature nature prominently. Both portray someone who is injured or in distress. And both depict a mythical or legendary being. While unintentional, it will be interesting to see what I come up with next.

Steve Walker 1961-2012
Canadian born artist Steve Walker passed away in early January from a heart attack near his home in Costa Rica.
He may have not been a mainstream household name, but within the gay community any guy with eyes most likely knows the
name or has seen the art of Steve Walker.
Before I began putting my own work on display (around 1999-2000) I had very little knowledge or even awareness
about the gay art genre. Sure, I had seen gay-themed paintings and illustrations. But I didn't know the names of the
artists, or anything about them.
But that quickly changed, and Steve Walker was one of the first artists whose name and work I began to easily recognize. That was
partly due to the immense popularity of his work. But I was also drawn to him because, while his work was gay themed it was not
first and foremost about sex (not that there is anything wrong with that). His work spoke about the emotions, relationships, and
social aspects of being gay, and that was something I, along with countless fans of his work, identified with.
From the beginning of my career I've gotten comments comparing my work to his, which I've always taken as an honor, but
saw as more a testament to how well known and how appreciated Steve's work was by the gay community. While I see all the differences
in our art, just the fact that people saw qualities in my work that caused them to compare it to the most well known contemporary artist
of the genre was and is humbling.
Years later when my work was picked up and represented by a gallery (Lyman-Eyer of Provincetown) that also carried Steve
Walker's, it was definitely a benchmark moment for me.
When I got the news a month ago that Steve Walker had died at a mere 50 years old, I was saddened, stunned and in disbelief.
I guess in the back of my mind, since we brushed along the same circles, I thought that one day I'd get to meet him in person, thank him
for inspiring me as an artist and in my life, talk technique with him, and commiserate about the social anxiety of gallery openings.
From all your fans, thank you for the gifts you have given us, you will be greatly missed.

Deep Blue |
I've done a few fantasy type pieces before, like the butterfly guy in Metamorphosis and the Halloween pieces I do each year, but when I was young, painting fantasy and sci-fi pictures was something I did all the time. While I can't predict the trajectory my art will take in the long term, Deep Blue could definitely be a strong indication for the direction of my upcoming works.

MS Walk

This weekend I've walked a total of 50 miles, sat under a big tent, and slept in a cabin at a kids summer camp on Cape Cod. Despite how unappealing that may sound, each year I actually look forward to it.
It was also a nice way to spend the 10 year anniversary of 9/11. Let's all take a moment to remember those who were lost and their loved ones.

Second Chance

Recently one of my originals, Natural Wonder, came back into my possession. It is one I am very fond of because it is inspired by my first (so far only) trip to the stunning Grand Canyon and it echos the fact that homosexuality is merely a natural occurrence. My latest work, Dobrý Den, was inspired by a photo I took while on vacation last year in Prague. The charming little buildings on the street started me wondering, who lives here, what might it be like to live in this place. Of course my mind gave it a sexy little slant!

My 50 Mile Walk for the Cure

In just about 2 months I'll be participating with my fellow Keep on Dancin' team members in my 4th MS Challenge Walk, 50 miles in 3 days to raise money to fight Multiple Sclerosis. I got involved because of a friend. She loves ballroom dancing (hence the name of our team), tho recently she decided a hiatus was needed. She's taking part in a new treatment therapy and it makes me want to try to raise more funds so she can keep on dancin'!
Thanks to everyone who donated and got me past my initial goal of $1500. My new goal is $2000. I'm still offering a free 2012 Michael Breyette Calendar for donations of $50 or more!

Beach Day |
Lately the weather in New England has been less than ideal, mostly rainy and cold. So when we do get a sunny day, all I want to do is grab a big towel and head for the beach.
Working on Beach Day presented a challenge because that's exactly what I wanted to do, go spend time on the beach. But we all have our jobs to do...

I'll be doing my 4th MS Challenge Walk in September, so with the nicer weather upon us it's time for me to put on my shoes & jockstrap (what?!?) and start my training walks.
I'm raising money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. I became involved when my friend Jenny was diagnosed with MS, a disease that attacks the nervous system.
Last year I gave everyone who donated $50 or more a free Art of Michael Breyette 2011 Calendar. And I'm making the same offer again this year. Help me reach my goal by donating $50 or more and I'll send you a copy of my 2012 Calendar when it becomes available!

Four New Works
Sexually Implicit |
My latest is a series of four works titled Sexually Implicit. Each original is 12" x 18", and individually they are titled Blue, Green, Red, and Yellow.
Each image in the series is available separately as a very limited (only 50) edition Studio Print reproducing the full 12" X 18" original size artwork. Also available is a special extra large 24" x 35" limited edition gallery print of all four works together.
The four originals are available framed through the Lyman-Eyer Gallery for $2500 each. Special pricing is available if you are interested in purchasing all four originals. However, all four will remain with the gallery through the end of my upcoming show, Seaons of Love this August.

The Bridge |
Sometimes finding that bridge to a better place is not easy. Sometimes you have to ask for directions. Sometimes you have to build your own bridge. Whatever it takes, there is a whole gleaming world of possibilities once you make it across.

The 'Season' Has Arrived!

I just received the first shipment of my new book Seasons of Love. It really looks great! The protective dust jacket is a nice touch, and the colors inside are vibrant.

Summer 2011 Exhibit
And now that the new year is upon us, it is the perfect time to announce my summer solo show. Also named Seasons of Love , my show will once again be hung at the Lyman-Eyer Gallery which represents me in Provincetown Massachusetts.
This year my show will start with the reception on Friday August 19th and run til the end of the month. I know many of you are used to coming to my show during Bear Week. So I wanted to let you know that many of my pieces for the show will arrive at the gallery by then, so you'll still get to check them out.

I am excited to announce that a second collection of my work, Seasons of Love is being published by Bruno Gmünder. This full color 80 page hardcover book will be released in February 2011.
